It all begins in Baghdad when Shams goes to Baba Zaman’s dervish lodge and tells him of his desire to share and transfer his knowledge to a true lover of God. The manuscript is about Rumi and Shams of Tabriz, based in the thirteenth century.

A forty year old married woman with three kids, she thinks she is having a mid-life crisis when she starts to question her life with the help of a manuscript, written by a writer Aziz, who she feels attracted to. She is described to be a very rule oriented and disciplined woman who doesn’t realize that she hasn’t really known love in her life. Written in a very philosophically mystic style, the novel revolves around two parallel story lines, which keep the reader reflective and engrossed till the end.Įlla’s family life has all but come to an end. I read this book three times and each time it lent more depth to my understanding.
